Hundreds of workers in popcorn factories in the US have brought lawsuits against their employers after working with the chemical - and recently a man who consumed two bags of microwave popcorn a day filed a lawsuit against the company that sold him the product, claiming he was not sufficiently warned against the risk. However, this is the first time court proceedings have been issued in relation to the disease in this country.
The condition is caused by exposure to the chemical agent diacetyl and results in irreversible lung damage when inhaled. Martin Muir from Bedale, North Yorkshire who has started proceedings against his former employer Firmenich, claims that he was exposed to the chemical while using a mix of food flavourings known as "base veg" and has been left with significantly reduced lung capacity.
Commenting on the case, Muir’s solicitor pointed out that the condition might be far more widespread than previously thought and that it highlights the need for employers to adequately protect their employees by issuing appropriate protection.
