Floods in the UK have resulted in businesses and home computer users losing their data. Read this article to find out the consequences of data loss and how pain free data backup can be

The recent floods in South Yorkshire and Gloucestershire in the UK really highlighted the importance of an effective data backup plan of home computers.  It has been reported that some 4,000 computers were ruined by the recent floods, of which only one percent was backed up.

The unfortunate scenario is that most of the data backed up was stored on local direct attached USB hard drives which was also ruined by the same rise in water, therefore nearly all data was lost.

Whilst the lost data is initially of little importance when a whole house or road has been flooded the reality once things get back to normal becomes evident.  Thankfully, most households were insured and replacement furniture, fixtures, fittings and computer equipment has been supplied so most households are now back to or getting back to a semblance of normality.  The only problem is that all the data once residing on your computer can not possibly be replaced, it has been destroyed.  All the photographs which were taken on holiday, of a recent wedding or birthday have been lost and will only become a distant memory.  The downloaded music and video which you spent good time and money to download all creates a lot of data is worthless to other people but invaluable to you, not to mention any important emails and documents which you may have stored.

So the most sensible amongst you have backed up to a USB hard drive but have still lost data, is there a way to prevent such data loss again?

For most home users who have and ADSL (broadband connection) online backup does become a viable way to backup and secure your data.  Even if your computer is totally destroyed by fire, theft, flood or general hard drive failure your data will always be safe.

So what is online backup?  It is a secure and totally automatic way to transfer your data via your existing internet connection to a secure offsite location.  All you have to do is install  simple backup software onto your computer, tell it what data you wish to backup (files, folders, photographs, music etc, you can even backup your whole hard drive) and when, then that is it, your data will be backed up every night.

The process is very simple and very fast, the backup software will initially run a full backup of all your data, once this has been completed only the data which has has changed or has been added in the previous day will be backed up, this is called an incremental backup.

So if you ever, for what ever reason, lose your data and and you have an online backup solution in place, your will always be able to restore your data.
