What is RSS?
RSS, short for Really Simple
Syndication, is a technology which automates the process of publishing
digital content. It is mostly used for frequently updated content, such
as blogs, news feeds or podcasts.
Why use RSS?
First of all, it makes publishing
articles or news really easy. Every time you want to get your message
across the whole world will know about it in only a few minutes.
Second of all, and this is, on the
Search Engine Optimisation point of view, the most important argument:
using RSS on your website, will increase its “search engine friendliness”. Search Engines LOVE frequently updated content.
To make this really work it is recommended to publish at least an article every two days.
How can you read RSS feeds?
Available are stand alone RSS software,
integrated RSS readers (such as Thunderbird, or Outlook) or even online
RSS readers (Google).
Specialized RSS software is
commonly called feed (RSS) -readers or –aggregators. After you have
chosen one and installed it on your computer you then need to subscribe
to the RSS feed by adding the RSS link to your reader.
The software (RSS reader) will now check the subscribed RSS and
see if this feed has new content available. From now on you can let the
news come to you. The software will check if new content has been
published since the last time it has been updated, and if this the case
it will retrieve that content automatically. (List of RSS readers)
The same procedure applies if you are using Thunderbird® or a similar product (ie Outlook®).
As a example add the Tetridia RSS feed to your list:
- open your Thunderbird > File > New > Account
- select "RSS News & Blogs"
- hit OK
- right-click on the new folder and select "Manage subscription"
- then paste the link. hit OK
You will see the result after a few seconds - the Tetridia RSS NEWS will appear...
How can you create an RSS feed yourself?
There are various ways to do this. You can use notepad, create an XML file manually and to put a link on your website.
Or - you can use a RSS creator ( just like this one RSS Editor),
which will work like a text editor and let you then save your work in
XML format. If you would like to know more about this have a look here:
Wikipedia.
The easiest way is to use a Content Management System such as Tetridia’s own CMS SymLink. Your Benefits:
- No need to wait for your IT
person - anybody in your company or even external can do any changes at
any time including setting up various incoming RSS feeds in different
sections on your website.
- Perfect
for your Search Engine Ranking - relevant content, updates done easily
and fast - means for you a better position in Google, Yahoo or MSN -
and therefore most likely increased traffic.
- Publish your RSS news with a familiar looking tool similar to Office Word.
... and that is all you need to do
to add another communication channel to your Marketing Mix. It is all
about spreading your message and keeping in touch with your clients on
a regular basis.
