Recycled Composite Cut by Waterjet
Hartnell Creative Communication Ltd (HCC) is a design company who specialise in providing exhibition design for issue communication and public information experiences. The company regularly wins awards for its innovative communication techniques which utilise new technology and hybrid materials in their delivery. With a growing need to use materials possessing a low carbon footprint, HCC are always on the lookout for new materials and production techniques. One such recent example has been on a project for the Greater London Authority. Producing an exhibition to promote energy saving ideas for London at the forthcoming TUC and Party Political Conferences. The exhibition, entitled 'DIY Planet Repairs’ utilises recycled materials and has been designed to be re-used and recycled for future events. A central feature of the stand is its interactive podium which includes a counter made from a composite of recycled plastic bottles and shredded CD roms, supplied by Smile Plastics Ltd. One of the challenges facing HCC's designers was how to clean cut the sharp profiles needed to window the two touch screens within the counter top. Being a polycarbonate based composite with metalized flecks embedded, laser cutting was out of the question and conventional cutting would have been both risky and time consuming to achieve the high standard of finish required. Local company, Precision Waterjet Ltd, were at hand to provide the perfect solution – Abrasive Waterjet cutting. All that was then required was conventional edge polishing to return the material to its original polished finish. Managing Director of HCC, Richard Hartnell said 'Precision Waterjet provided the perfect solution for us, working from our CAD files they were able to cut us a test template out of plywood first so that we could check the accuracy of our design, Once we were satisfied with the outcome we were able to call Precision Waterjet who then pressed the button on cutting the precious composite. We were impressed at how quickly the final product was turned around and we hope to work with Precision Waterjet again exploring the many new possibilities of their system’.
